Aamir Khan’s problems don’t seem to abate. In the first weekend, Lal Singh Chaddha was harshly rejected by the audience. Despite the festive atmosphere and the long vacation, Lal Singh Chaddha sat out the first weekend. Despite spending a week in theaters, Laal Singh Chaddha’s earnings failed to even cross the Rs 50 crore benchmark. Where was Aamir Khan planning to show the film in theaters for six months? But due to lack of audience, the film’s screens began to decline from the first weekend. The film made at around Rs 180 crore has suffered a tremendous commercial loss from theaters. This loss seems to go further.
After the loss in theaters, now the film doesn’t seem to be getting value even on OTT. The English newspaper ‘Mid Day’ published from Mumbai has done a report. This report is about the OTT deal between the creators of Lal Singh Chaddha and Netflix. According to Mid-Day, talks were taking place between the creators and Netflix regarding streaming rights on the OTT platform. But it doesn’t seem to be working. In fact, the creators of Lal Singh Chaddha demanded a whopping Rs 150 crore from Netflix in exchange for the OTT rights. But Netflix isn’t willing to pay that much.
The deal would have compensated for the loss of the creators.
Netflix is set to pay just Rs 50 crore for Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s film, much less than demand. That also with condition. Six months after it was released in theaters, the condition of transmission created by the creators, the OTT platform requested to reduce it further in the deal of 50 million rupees. It doesn’t seem like Netflix is willing to give Rs 50 crore to Aamir’s movie. That too when the original movie is on their platform and some reports say that Forrest Gump’s viewership has increased after the release of Laal Singh Chaddha. Why would Netflix take a huge risk against public sentiment?
Since the Netflix offer came out, almost no OTT platform should give Lal Singh Chaddha as much money as the producers ask. By the way, if the movie gets even Rs 100 crore on the deal, investors will get a huge relief. The total worldwide collection of the film has exceeded 100 million rupees. 100 million rupees and getting it means much less loss. Manufacturers can also offset other losses by selling TV and other rights. But the question is, who will agree to give 100 crore or 150 crore to Lal Singh Chaddha?
Why Laal Singh Chaddha Was a Box Office Disaster
Lal Singh Chaddha, directed by Advait Chandan, has become a victim of opposition from the audience. Actually, the audience was angry about all the Aamir Khan stuff. In the backlash against the film on social media, people were seen accusing Aamir Khan of being anti-Hindu and saying that he left no stone unturned to deliberately insult Hindus in his films. He never made statements about Islamic stereotypes as much as he criticized Hindus. People also viewed all of his statements as anti-national, with his statement of intolerance being the most important after Modi became prime minister.
The kind of negative campaign shown against Lal Singh Chaddha, there was no such resentment against any Indian film before, its effect was that on the first day, Aamir’s film failed to perform as per expectations. While the film was released across India on more than 3,500 screens in a better environment. Another issue is that Lal Singh was also in conflict with Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan. However, Raksha Bandhan also performed very poorly. The total collection of both films was also not such that it must be said that the films damaged each other.
Well, now it remains to be seen what efforts the creators of Lal Singh Chaddha make to recoup the cost. Laal Singh Chaddha’s producers include Aamir Khan himself, his ex-wife Kiran Rao, and Viacom 18 Studios.
