New Delhi: Former BJP leader Babul Supriyo has joined the Trinamool Congress following the removal of Narendra Modi from the cabinet. The former Union minister decided to join the Trinamool Congress in the run-up to the by-elections in West Bengal. Present on the occasion were the Secretary General of the Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee, and Deputy Derrick O’Brien.

Babul Supriyo had said that he was leaving politics after being removed from the Union Cabinet and would not join any political party. This was followed by the entry of the Trinamool Congress.

Babul Supriyo is the fifth BJP leader to join the Trinamool Congress after Mamata Banerjee’s return to power in West Bengal. The other four were state BJP MLAs.

Babul Supriyo announced his departure from the party after expressing dissatisfaction with the Union Cabinet’s non-reconsideration and the organizational problems in West Bengal. This followed the reorganization of the Union Cabinet in July. Previously, he held the positions of Minister of State for Urban Development and Forests and the Environment.

Meanwhile, party sources said that more BJP leaders are partnering with Trinamool. “Many BJP leaders are in contact with the Trinamool leadership. None of them are happy with the BJP. One wants to join today and one wants to join tomorrow. The process will continue. Wait and see.” Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh said.

The arrival of the former Union minister is expected to benefit Mamata Banerjee and her party, which is contesting a crucial election. At the same time, it could be a major setback for the BJP in the state.
