Bestseller Review: Mithun Da’s Debut Web Series Gets a Misdirection

You must have heard a saying, ‘Khoda mountain nikli chuhiya’. Something similar is felt after seeing the web series ‘Bestseller’ being broadcast on the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video. Because after watching eight half-hour episodes, if the headache starts instead of entertainment, then you will surely feel that way. There is also a great cast of stars in this web series like Shruti Haasan, Arjan Bajwa, Gauhar Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Satyajit Dubey and Sonali Kulkarni who the audience always have higher expectations of. This psychological thriller based on ‘She Rot’ is directed by Mukul Abhyankar. The screenplay is written by Althea Kaushal and Anvita Dutt.

The ‘Bestseller’ web series is being broadcast on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform.

At the center of the story of the ‘Bestseller’ web series is a Hindi novelist, who is also a celebrity like Chetan Bhagat. Sudden turbulence begins in the life of Tahir Wazir (Arjan Bajwa), a Hindi novelist living in Mumbai. A famous novel written by him ten years ago is still popular, but for the second novel he has no story. While searching for this story, he one day meets a girl named Mithu Mathur (Shruti Haasan) in a cafe. Mitu is excited to see her. She goes to him and calls herself a fan. During the conversation, Mitú tells the story of her life. Hearing this, Tahir feels that the story of his second novel may be the story of Mitu’s life.

Tahir Wazir is so impressed with Mitu Mathur that he offers to work with him. Get a new flat for him. Meanwhile, Tahir’s wife, Mayanka (Gauhar Khan), an advertising filmmaker, hires a new intern, Parth Acharya (Satyajit Dubey), at her company. They both begin to slowly approach each other. Thus begins the game of infidelity between husband and wife, in which Tahir-Meetu and Mayanka-Parth begin to live separate lives. Meanwhile, targeting the people around Tahir, a mysterious person starts attacking. That person, who calls himself ‘Wazir is God’, sometimes attacks Meetu and sometimes Mayanka. Trolls Tahir in social networks. Tired of all this, Tahir goes to the police.

This is followed by the entrance of ACP Lokesh Pramanik (Mithun Chakraborty), who sets off in search of Tahir’s mysterious enemy. However, the ACP does not know who the enemy is, but the audience does. Who is that enemy now? What is his feud with Tahir Wazir? To know all this, you have to watch the web series. But it can be said that there is no need for the audience to waste their precious four hours to get answers to these questions. Because the name is big and the philosophy is small. Although there are stars like Mithun Chakraborty and Gauhar Khan in this web series, there is total Siyapa in the name of suspense. The main reason for this is the poor direction and weak script. Its director, Mukul Abhyankar, has done a long job for the television industry. He has directed many serials. He has also directed the Manoj Bajpayee and Tabu film ‘Missing’ released in 2018, but this time he has missed out.

Even at the acting level, despite the presence of many famous actors, no one has stood out. The actors have tried to play their characters in some way. The performance of Shruti Haasan, Arjan Bajwa, Gauahar Khan, Satyajit Dubey and Sonali Kulkarni is average. Yes, after the entrance of Mithun Chakraborty’s ACP character Lokesh Pramanik, there is some interest, but due to the cliffhanger ending of the story, that interest also ends. Overall, Mithun Chakraborty’s debut web series ‘Bestseller’ has been sacrificed for poor direction. Watching this is a waste of time.
