Kolkata: Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari will not contest the Bhawanipur by-elections against Mamata Banerjee. West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh made the announcement. Mamata Banerjee, who ran from Nandigram in the last election, was defeated by Suvendu Adhikari. Dilip Ghosh told reporters that the party has not decided who will be the candidate in Bhawanipur.

He said that the BJP was studying the possibility of going to the Calcutta High Court against the Election Commission’s decision to hold by-elections in Bhawanipur and would seek legal advice in this regard.

By-elections are crucial for Mamata Banerjee, who came to power as West Bengal’s chief minister despite losing the election. Mamata Banerjee was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 5. If he does not become an MLA by November 5, Mamata will have to resign as chief minister.

In the last election, Mamata lost by 1,956 votes to Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP in Nandigram. The partial vote follows the resignation of senior Trinamool MLA Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, who was the Bhavanipur MLA. Mamata Banerjee was an MLA from Bhawanipur in 2011 and 2016.

By-elections will be held in four assembly constituencies in Bengal and Odisha on May 30. In addition to Bhawanipur, by-elections are being held in Serganj and Jangipur in Bengal. The vote count will take place on October 3.

Meanwhile, in Bhawanipur, it was reported yesterday that Congress cannot present a candidate against Mamata Banerjee. In that case, the Congress and the Trinamool Congress will face the BJP together in the constituency.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi had said that opposition parties should work together before the 2024 general election. Mamata Banerjee, who opposed the BJP movement in the West Bengal Assembly elections, is in close contact with congressional leaders.

Congress is reportedly approaching Mamata Banerjee as part of the formation of a broad opposition alliance. Mamata Banerjee had attended a virtual meeting of opposition parties called by Sonia Gandhi before the general elections of 2024.
