Future posters will include a picture of Nehru: ICHR

The Indian Council for Historical Research says future posters as part of the country’s 75th Independence Day celebrations will include a portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru. The IACHR’s position came as a result of accusations by opposition parties that Nehru was left out of a poster prepared as part of the Azadi Ki Amrit Maholsav program. NDTV reports that a senior ICHR official responded that the controversy was unnecessary. The IACHR is an autonomous body dependent on the Ministry of Education. Mohandas Karamchand Chand Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Dr. BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Solo Rajendra Prasad, Madan Mohan Malviya and VD Savarkar have a photo. The opposition alleges that Nehru’s image was deliberately omitted. Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted that those who did not fight for freedom did not know who fought. Arvind Jamkhedkar, former president of the IACHR, said that Nehru could not have been deliberately excluded from the cartel. “It is possible that Nehru was left out due to the negligence of the IACHR. When it comes to the fight for freedom, no one can exclude Nehru. He does not believe in political interference. I do not think that anyone deliberately avoids Nehru,” he said Arvind Jamkhedkar. Arvind had vacated the post last March following the expiration of his term. The Ministry of Education has not appointed a new president. Congressional leader Jairam Ramesh has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of remaining silent on a crucial issue on Twitter. ” There are actions against history and honest facts. We know that the Prime Minister wants to destroy Nehru’s legacy. All the Prime Minister has to do is get rid of prejudices and intervene on the issue and rectify the situation with the IACHR, ”Jairam Ramesh tweeted. The leader of Congress, P Chidambaram, said that the explanation given by the IACHR on the matter was ridiculous. The IACHR member secretary has succumbed to hatred and animosity. Chidambaram also asked if he would ignore Henry Ford in celebrating the history of automobiles or the Wright brothers in celebrating the history of airplanes. The secretary general of Congress, KC Venugopal, alleged that bad policy was being carried out. “Any Independence Day celebration that does not include the progressive contributions Nehru made to the country is historic. You can remove Nehru’s name. But ideas cannot be erased,” says KC Venugopal. Top Congressional Leaders Shashi Tharoor , Gaurav Gogoi and Pawan Khera also condemned the IACHR’s measure. **** (Compiled by Aneeb PA)
