Seeing the poor state of films at the box office, Bollywood sheltered from the OTT

Due to the closure of cinemas during the Corona period, a large number of filmmakers began to release their films on OTT platforms. But later, after theaters opened, the temptation to win at the box office increased, so movies started opening there first. But after the second wave of Corona, time turned against Bollywood. On the one hand, Southern movies started to make records at the box office, while on the other hand, most Bollywood movies started to become huge flops. Movies like ‘Dhaakad’, ‘Jersey’, ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’, ‘Runway-34’ and ‘Heropanti 2’ are a vivid example of this. It happened that due to the bad failure at the box office, many films did not get any buyers even in OTT. Because of this, many Bollywood filmmakers are now working on a plan to release their films directly on OTT. In this episode, the first name appears in front of Kangana Ranaut who is horrified after seeing the ill fate of her movie ‘Dhaakad’.

It is said that after the failure of the movie ‘Dhaakad’, Kangana Ranaut and producer RSVP of ‘Tejas’ are working on a plan to release the movie directly on the OTT platform. Not only that, it has been decided to reshoot many parts of the film to avoid the mistakes made in ‘Dhaakad’. The makers believe that given the condition of Bollywood movies at the box office due to South Cinema at the moment, the film can best be released by releasing it on OTT. With this, the cost of the film will also be profitable and there will be no risk of failure. However, many movies have done well on OTT despite not doing well at the box office. But once the flop gets the label and there’s negative publicity, OTT also avoids buying the movie. Just watch Dhaakad movie. After proving to be a box office disaster, no one is buying its satellite and digital rights.

Launching ‘Dhaakad’ on OTT would have been a profitable business

Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Dhaakad’ opened on 2,200 screens across the country. But a week after the premiere, the film was able to survive on only 25 screens. In the second week, the film was withdrawn from 99 percent of theaters compared to the first week. The movie didn’t even have a name in any movie theater in Mumbai. While most of the profit of any movie comes from the Mumbai circuit itself. From here he receives 40 percent of the total profits of the film. But the film was pulled from Mumbai theaters only after the poor showing in the first week. The film earned Rs 1.2 crore on the first day of the first week, Rs 1.05 crore on the second day, Rs 98 lakh on the third day, Rs 30 lakh on the fourth day and Rs 25 lakh on the fifth day. On the eighth day, there was a desire to win 5 lakhs. Only 20 tickets for the movie were sold that day. Seeing such a state of the film, no OTT platform dared to buy it. Otherwise, this film could easily have been sold for 80 to 100 million rupees.

This is how movies win on OTT platforms

This question must be on some people’s minds: how do movies earn on OTT platforms? In such a situation, let us tell you that OTT platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, MX Player, Alt Balaji, Voot, and Zee5 buy the movie or its digital rights from any producer like a distributor. Just as producers sell their movies to distributors, they sell their movies to OTT platforms by adding their profits to the budget. Here the OTT platforms are in the role of distributor. This deal is different for different language versions of the same movie. If the movie is streamed directly on OTT, then its cost is high. In such a situation, the price is calculated by adding the budget and the profit estimate. But if the movie is released in theaters first, then its price is decided by digital rights alone. A movie can be streamed on OTT just three weeks after the movie’s release in theaters. Sometimes movies are also released in hybrid model.

The film opens in two windows simultaneously in the hybrid model.

The hybrid model means that the film is released simultaneously on the same day on both the OTT platform and in theaters. The way the public buys tickets and goes to theaters to see the film. Similarly, you can watch the movie on OTT in ‘pay per view’ mode. Salman Khan’s ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’ is the first Hindi film to be released in a hybrid model. It was released simultaneously on the OTT platform Zee5 and in theaters. The reservation fee to watch the movie once on G-Plex remained at Rs 249. Subscribers of OTT platforms are also required to watch the movie by paying money in this modality. However, this model has not been very successful. Before that, movies released directly on OTT made a good profit compared to their cost. For example, Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Gulabo Sitabo’, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Lakshmi’, Sanjay Dutt’s ‘Sadak 2’, Ajay Devgn’s ‘Bhuj’, Abhishek Bachchan’s ‘The Big Bull’ and Vidyut Jamwal’s ‘Khuda Hafiz’. Published only in OTT. In this ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ 65 crores (cost 35 crores), ‘Lakshmi’ 125 crores (cost 60 crores), ‘Bhuj’ 110 crores (100 crores), ‘The Big Bull’ 40 crores (35 crores). ) was bought by OTT.

The film makers also charge twice the cost of OTT

If you look at it this way, because of the direct OTT release, the movies don’t have to bear the loss at all. If the movie’s star cast and marketing are good, many times the OTT price is also twice the cost. For example, watch Akshay Kumar’s movie Lakshmi. The cost of this movie is Rs 60 crore while Disney plus Hotstar bought it for Rs 125 crore. After buying movies at such an expensive price, OTT platforms get their profits back from it. This benefit is divided into three categories. The first TVOD means that when each user downloads any content, they pay a fee for it. Second SVOD, that is, the user pays money every month or once a year to view the content of an OTT platform. Take monthly or yearly subscription. The third is AVOD, that is, the platform where the user does not have to pay any money to see the content. Subscription to that OTT platform is free. But here the user has to see the ads. Just like MX Player subscription is free but there are many ads on web series or movies shown on it. Just like we watch all the videos on YouTube for free, but we also have to watch ads.
