State Border Dispute: Mizoram Brings Case Against Assam’s Chief Minister for Attempted Assassination

Guwahati: Mizoram has brought a case against Assam’s Chief Minister and others for attempted assassination in connection with the ongoing border dispute between the two states. The Mizoram police have registered a case against the chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sharma, and six senior officials. They have been charged with aggravated battery and attempted murder.

The FIR was registered on July 26, The Quint reported. A case has been registered against some 200 police officers in connection with the incident. The case was registered at the Vairankad Police Station in the Kolasib district of Mizoram. It shares a border with Assam’s Kochhar district, where people from both states clashed last week. Five Assam police officers were also killed in the violence.

The 164-kilometer border has been the subject of years of disputes between the two states. Negotiations to resolve the problems have been underway since 1994, but until now no solution has been found. The problem flared again after the Assam government cracked down on those living in shacks along the river at the state border. With this, the two factions clashed. It was also reported that the police joined the confrontation. The Mizoram and Assam police allege that the attack was carried out by the Mizoram police.
