This Gujarati movie won the battle between ‘RRR’ and ‘The Kashmir Files’!

SS Rajamouli’s film ‘RRR’, Vivek Agnihotri’s film ‘The Kashmir Files’, Fahad Fazil’s Malayalam film ‘Malaynkunju’ and Nani’s Telugu film ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ were all the country’s great films in the race for an Oscar nomination. For the past few days, there has been a debate on social media about who should be sent to the Oscars in ‘RRR’ and ‘The Kashmir Files’. People were making their own arguments for both movies. They were also fighting each other. But on September 20, the Film Federation of India surprised everyone by announcing the name of a new movie apart from all these movies. Yes, the Gujarati film ‘Chello Show’, whose English name is ‘Last Film Show’, has been officially nominated for the Oscars. The film is written and directed by Pan Nalin.

The film ‘Chello Sho’ (Last Film Show), which was nominated by India for the Best International Feature Film category, is based on the dreams of a Gujarati boy. A boy from a very poor home works in a tea shop with his father while he goes to school. Due to the presence of a store at the station, he goes to the train and gives people tea. He tries to watch movies while hiding from his father. One day he goes to the movie theater located in the town. There, a film projector present in the projection room urges the technician to show films by enticing him to feed him homemade food. The technician agrees, he starts showing her movies instead of food. But one day he pushes the boy out of the movie theater. After this, the boy decides that he will prepare the projector himself and show the cinema to everyone.

The film ‘Chello Show’ (Last Film Show) has already been screened at many international film festivals.

Thus, this film shows how the whole life of a child changes because of cinema. The film’s director, Pan Nalin, is known for producing award-winning films such as ‘Angry Indian Goddess’, ‘Valley of Flowers’ and ‘Faith Connection’. Expressing her happiness after the film Chello show was officially nominated for an Oscar, she wrote on social media, “It’s like a dream. Thank you Film Federation of India and the jury members. Thank you for believing in Chello Show. Now I can breathe again and believe in cinema, which entertains and inspires people.” The film premiered on June 10, 2021 at the 20th Tribeca Film Festival. It was the first Gujarati film to go to this film festival. The Chello Show was nominated for the Tiantan Award at the Beijing International Film Festival. This film has won the Golden Spike Award for Best Film at the Dolled Film Festival.

Many people are surprised by this decision by the Film Federation of India. Along with this, he regrets that the best film like ‘RRR’ has not been sent to the Oscars. These people say that this was the first time in the history of Indian cinema, when an Indian film had every chance of winning an Oscar. But the members of the Federation did not know what was seen in the Gujarati film, which sent it to the Oscars. Film critic Sumit Kadel has written: “The Gujarati film Chello Show will be sent to the Oscar 2023. Forget the Oscar award, there is no chance of nomination. Among the films released in the last two decades, RRR was the most likely of winning an Oscar. Very sad that the Film Federation of India ignored this fact. If these people only wanted to submit art cinema, then what was wrong with The Kashmir Files, which was liked by a large number in the country And abroad? I’m not saying Chhelo Show is a bad movie.

Himesh Mankad, film journalist for Pinkvilla, wrote: “Given RRR’s worldwide popularity, there was a chance it would win awards in several Oscar categories. But it’s heartbreaking that the film celebrating Indian cinema was not deemed Oscar-worthy. The Federation jury members couldn’t even recognize him.” Writer and journalist Asjad Nazir writes: “It is a ridiculous decision to send the Gujarati film Chello Show for Oscar 2023. It is a self-indulgent film, which may not even have been seen in theaters. While the RRR film festival has been seen in theaters. In this, Jr NTR has given a world class performance. India has missed a great opportunity. A Srileela user on Twitter wrote: “It’s heartbreaking that FFI members have not sent a film like RRR to the Oscars. The whole world is crazy about this movie. His locker collection attests to his popularity. But an unknown film has been deemed worthy of an Oscar.

After this FFI decision, I am reminded of the point by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, where he said that Indian filmmakers should make international level films. Along with this, the jury that selects the films for the Oscars must have members who have an understanding of international cinema, know its level. It is not that the traditional people sitting in the Film Federation of India choose the films according to their choice and send them to the Oscars. If a good movie is selected, then your chances of winning the Oscar will be higher. Most of the Indian films submitted to the Oscars are not at that level. So how can you expect to win the prize? John Bailey, former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, also said, “Why aren’t Indian films shown widely? Not only in Hollywood or the United States, but all over the world. Indian films are very popular in China, but are they popular in Korea or Japan? You should ask the PR organizations, distributors and the government why Indian movies can’t be promoted all over the world. The movies that are submitted for nomination, are they targeted to other countries?
