The era of remakes and biopics is happening in Bollywood for the last few years. For this reason, 70 percent of the films made here are remakes or biographies. Remakes of mostly southern movies are also being made. In such a situation, South Cinema has quickly earned its place in the Hindi belt through its fresh content. The box office collection of many Southern films released over the last year is proof of that. If you don’t believe it, look at the earnings of Allu Arjun’s film ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, ‘RRR’ directed by SS Rajamouli and Rocking Star Yash’s film ‘KGF Chapter 2’. Looking at his box office collection, it’s clear that audiences now prefer fresh, original content over remakes and biographies. Despite this, Bollywood is still working on the old formula. Recently, veteran filmmaker Rohit Shetty has announced that he will be making a biopic of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. This movie will be made under their Cop Universe franchise.
This will be the first biographical film for Rohit Shetty, which he is producing in association with Reliance Entertainment. Rakesh Maria’s personal and professional life will be shown in the film. Rakesh Maria has seen many terrorist incidents up close in his long police career. Rakesh, an IPS from the 1981 batch, was involved in the 1993 Mumbai serial explosions as a deputy commissioner of police (traffic) in the police team, who was given responsibility for solving the case. After this, he was also given the responsibility of investigating the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai in the year 2008. He had interrogated the Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab for a long time. Regarding this film, Rohit said, “Rakesh Maria is the person who watched terror for 36 years. From the Mumbai explosions in 1993, the threat from the underworld to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, her journey It’s been a long time. It’s a point of pride for me to bring the bravery of real-life super cops to the movie screen.” The film will be based on the biography written by Rakesh Maria.
More than 10 Bollywood biographical films have been released in the last two years. Of these, ‘Gunjan Saxena’, ‘Shakuntala Devi’, ‘Sania’, ‘Sher Shah’, ‘The Big Bull’, ‘Sardar Udham’, ’83’ and ‘Thalaivi’ were released in the year 2021. At the same time , ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and ‘Jhund’ were released this year. Of all these films, four have been released in theaters, while six have been released on OTT platforms due to Corona. ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ’83’, ‘Thalaivi’ and ‘Jhund’ have been released in theaters, while ‘Gunjan Saxena’, ‘Shakuntala Devi’, ‘Sania’, ‘Sher Shah’, ‘The Big Bull’, ‘ Sardar Udham airs. Their performance can be understood through the box office collection and IMDb rating of these movies.
The story of the film ‘Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl’, which is broadcast on the OTT platform Netflix, is based on the life of a female pilot. Pilot Gunjan Saxena was the only woman from India who fought in the war during the Kargil War. Faced with her indomitable courage, Pakistan had bowed. In this film, the character of Gunjan Saxena was played by Sridevi-Boney Kapoor’s daughter, Janhvi Kapoor. Actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi, Manav Vij, Riva Arora, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Manish Verma and Vineet Kumar are present with him in the film. The film is directed by Sharan Sharma. The film earned a 5.6 out of 10 rating on IMDb. Of 35 thousand voters, 10 thousand have given 10 ratings.
Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi movie is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The great Indian mathematician Shakuntala Devi, laureate of the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records, was considered a human computer and brought laurels to the world with her unique ability to solve even the most difficult calculations in a jiffy. Director Anu Menon’s film Shakuntala Devi has succeeded in showing her achievements and struggles from her personal and public life on the big screen. The film has a rating of 6.1/10. Along with this, Shershah movie is based on the life of Param Vir Chakra winner Captain Vikram Batra. Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the film was well received. It has become the most watched movie of all time in India. In the first two weeks, ‘Sher Shah’ has been viewed by more than 4,100 Indians. It has been broadcast in cities as well as in 210 countries and territories around the world. The movie scored 9.4/10 on IMDb which shows its popularity.
Like Siddharth Malhotra’s Sher Shah movie, Vicky Kaushal’s Sardar Udham movie was also highly appreciated by people. The film is based on the biography of the great freedom fighter Sardar Udham Singh. Vicky Kaushal, Amol Parashar, Banita Sandhu, Sean Scott, Stephen Hogen, Kirsty Everton along with many Indian and foreign actors have worked in this film directed by Shoojit Sircar. This movie also got a rating of 9.2/10. Apart from this, ’83’, ‘Thalaivi’ and ‘Jhund’ have all scored average except for the movie ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ released in theaters.
The performance of these films has been disappointing. Given this situation, it can be said that in the biographical films made in Bollywood, those films that are related to history have been successful so far. But those movies are flops, whose story is in front of the people of the last two generations. Rohit Shetty is a sensible filmmaker. His Cop Universe movies are highly appreciated. Faced with such a situation, despite being a biopic, he has opted for the Copy Universe movie. There’s a movie about Rakesh Maria, so it’s obvious that only the crime story will be shown. In such a situation, the box office success of this film is almost certain. Let’s see when the movie is released.
